PASSING BY NELLA LARSEN
This isn't a book I would normally select but I'm glad I read it. The setting is Harlem, New York and the main characters are Irene and Clare. Both of them grew up in Chicago and both of them are technically "Negro" although they are fair complected and no one would know they had a distant relative who was black by looking at them. That is basically the premise of the whole story. The ridiculous nature of race and how even when our features are similar there is still a prejudice. "Passing" refers to Negro women who pretend to be white so they can enjoy the social privileges others with dark skin cannot. Kind of selfish but it also demonstrates how silly segregation is.
